THIS year’s Coca-Cola Games is anticipated to be extremely competitive, with no obvious favourites in the blue-ribbon senior boys’ event due to the intense preparation of participants.

National athletics coach Albert Miller revealed this in an interview with Times Sport yesterday.

“We have good running times recorded from the intermediate level, while the senior boys are struggling to run 11 seconds, so there will be fierce competition in the blue-ribbon senior boys,” Miller said.

“To prepare the athletes for the Coke Games, there will be a high level and high intensity type of training for the next few weeks, and hopefully Athletics Fiji will have a few other competitions”.

The results of the several zone meetings indicate that this year’s Coca-Cola Games will be very interesting.

“I think everyone is getting serious about preparing themselves accordingly in the next few weeks before the Coca-Cola Games 2026,” Miller stated.

“Individually, there are a few of them because the competition is now fierce, but there is still no real outstanding athlete to focus on during the Coke Games this year.”

A significant number of athletes are anticipated to compete in the Fiji National Athletics Championships at the HFC Bank Stadium in Suva today.

Miller stated that although the competition has eliminated a good number of athletes, there are still a few that are coming from the West.

“Even though the registration closed last Friday, we are still receiving entries because of the overwhelming interest from athletes,” Miller said.

The former Olympian and national decathlete shared these sentiments on the sidelines of the 2026 Fiji National Athletics Championships and Final Trials Oceania Championships, which unfolded at the HFC Bank Stadium in Suva yesterday and finishes today.

Meanwhile, the Coca-Cola Games, also known as the Fiji Finals will be held from April 30-May 1 at the same venue.

Tough competition is expected this year, as many schools will aim to dethrone the reigning champions Marist Brothers High School for the boys division and Mahatma Gandhi Memorial High School for the girls.
