Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka will address the nation at 7pm this evening on the current fuel situation, as concerns grow over rising costs.

In an earlier statement, Government acknowledged the increase in fuel prices effective from today and the added financial pressure it will place on households and businesses.

“The Fijian Government acknowledges the increase in fuel prices… and recognises the added financial pressure this will place on families, workers, and businesses across the country,” the statement said.

Government said it understood that higher fuel costs would impact the cost of living and doing business, including transportation, food and everyday goods.

“Government stands with the people of Fiji during this time and acknowledges the genuine hardship many will face,” it said.

Officials clarified that the price adjustment was determined by the Fijian Competition and Consumer Commission, which operates independently of Government.

“This means that the decision on fuel pricing is made outside of Government, based on global fuel market conditions and pricing formulas,” the statement said.

Government also pointed to the global fuel crisis, noting that price shocks were expected due to international market volatility.

The Prime Minister’s address tonight is expected to provide further clarity on the situation and outline Government’s response to rising fuel costs.
