MICK Byrne, once head coach of the FIJI Water Flying Fijians, parted ways with the Fiji Rugby Union yesterday.

The union announced his departure from the role in a press statement released after 3pm yesterday, where it detailed how their separation stemmed from a move they both believed was made in the best interests of the future of the Flying Fijians.

And in a virtual press conference from Nadi at the same time, Fiji Rugby leaders John Sanday and Koli Sewabu ushered in Senirusi Seruvakula to be the acting head coach in this transition period as Rugby House now starts the process of seeking Byrne’s successor.

It’s the final chapter in a saga that unfolded last month when media reports uncovered the union’s exploration of possible changes to the role of head coach of the national XV team.

At the time, those concerns were regarding Byrne’s health and fitness to continue in the role and how certain groups had been pushing the union for possible replacements.

Yesterday, Byrne’s sentiments over his exit were relayed in the same statement announcing his departure.

“It has been an honour to work with the Flying Fijians players and staff. And before that, the Drua players and staff,” Byrne wrote.

“I have been overwhelmed by the support of the ‘world’s best’ Fiji fans during my five-year involvement – their warmth and welcome have meant a great deal to me.”

Fiji Rugby Union chief executive Koli Sewabu acknowledged the contributions by Byrne.

“Mick has been fully committed to his role and remains dedicated to the players and staff,” Sewabu said.

Sewabu added the move by Byrne and the FRU was made out of respect for the team and to ensure “the program can continue to the new direction that Fiji Rugby has set for the future.”

The change in hands over the key coaching role have occurred with only three months to go until the Nations Championships kicks off in July in England.
