PARENTS who leave their children behind to work overseas have been urged to ensure proper care and support is in place, amid concerns about neglect and risky behaviour among children.

Minister for Women, Children and Social Protection Sashi Kiran raised the issue when responding to concerns about children being left with guardians while parents work under overseas employment schemes.

She stressed that responsibility remained with parents, even when they were away.

“Sadly, well, when a parent brings a child into this world, it’s their responsibility to make sure that their child is well supported, protected, and taken care of,” she said.

She said parents must make proper arrangements before leaving the country.

“So, I do reiterate that parents, if they have to step away for some reason, for work or anything, they need to provide the right kind of care and support.”

Ms Kiran said this included ensuring children are placed with responsible caregivers or extended family members.

“Whether it’s extended family or caregivers, that is the parent’s responsibility.”

Her comments follow growing concerns that some children left behind may face neglect and become vulnerable to harmful behaviour, including drug use. She said the issue highlighted the need for stronger family support systems and monitoring to ensure children remain safe and cared for in the absence of their parents.

She urged parents to ensure that despite employment opportunities overseas, the protection and wellbeing of their children must always remain a priority.
