MICK Byrne, head coach of the FIJI Water Flying Fijians, has stepped down from the role effective immediately, the Fiji Rugby Union has confirmed.

In a statement, the FRU said Byrne and the union had come to that conclusion in the best interests of Fiji Rugby, following discussions about the future direction of the Flying Fijians program.

FRU CEO Koli Sewabu acknowledged the work carried out by Byrne in the role.

“Mick (Byrne) has been fully committed to his role and remains dedicated to the players and staff,” Sewabu said.

The statement also quoted Byrne’s sentiments, as he shared how it had been an honour to work with the Flying Fijians players and staff and prior to that, the players and staff at the Fijian Drua.

He has also wished Fiji Rugby every success moving forward.

The FRU will also announce interim coaching and the process to appoint a successor soon in due course.
