The Government has acknowledged the latest increase in fuel prices, saying it understands the financial strain the adjustment will place on households and businesses across the country.

In a statement posted on its social media page, Government said the rise in fuel prices would impact the cost of living and the cost of doing business, particularly in areas such as transportation, food and other essential goods.

“Government stands with the people of Fiji during this time and acknowledges the genuine hardship many will face,” the statement said.

It clarified that fuel prices are determined by the Fijian Competition and Consumer Commission (FCCC), which operates independently and sets prices based on global fuel market conditions and established pricing formulas.

“This means that the decision on fuel pricing is made outside of Government,” the statement said, adding that global fuel market volatility is expected to continue causing price shocks.

Despite not directly setting fuel prices, Government said it is working on a range of measures to cushion the impact of the increase.

These include targeted financial and policy responses aimed at supporting low-income households, assisting businesses facing rising operational costs, and maintaining stability in key sectors of the economy.

Further details on these mitigation measures are expected to be announced soon.

Government has also urged Fijians to use fuel responsibly and adopt measures to improve efficiency and reduce unnecessary consumption.

It reaffirmed its commitment to protecting the welfare of citizens and ensuring the country remains resilient despite global economic challenges.
