The sailing permit for the Lomaiviti Princess 9, the vessel at the centre of this week’s Ellington Wharf blockade, has been revoked by the Maritime Safety Authority of Fiji, prompting a strong response from operator Goundar Shipping Limited (GSL).

In a statement, GSL described the suspension of the vessel’s Coastal Trading Licence (CTL) as “unlawful” and “procedurally improper,” arguing the decision was made without due process or an opportunity for the company to be heard.

“At all material times, GSL has operated in strict compliance with its approved schedules and all permits and authorisations issued by the Government and the Maritime Safety Authority of Fiji over the past seven years,” the statement said.

GSL maintained that no prior notice of breach or non-compliance had been issued before the suspension.

The company rejected the decision as “null and void,” and confirmed it would pursue legal action, including judicial review and claims for damages.

The development follows a standoff at Ellington Jetty earlier this week, where the LP9 was accused of blocking access, leaving passengers stranded and sparking criticism of maritime authorities.

GSL has called for the immediate reversal of the suspension and warned it would take all necessary legal steps to protect its operations.
