The UNAIDS has paid tribute to the late Ratu Epeli Nailatikau, describing him as a steadfast champion of dignity, inclusion and the fight against HIV across the Pacific.
In a statement, UNAIDS Executive Director Winnie Byanyima said Ratu Epeli played a pivotal role in shaping the region’s HIV response.
“Ratu Epeli Nailatikau played an important role in shaping the HIV response in the Pacific. His efforts to address stigma and promote community-led approaches have left a lasting impact on the region’s journey toward ending AIDS,” Ms Byanyima said.
Ratu Epeli, who served as a UNAIDS Goodwill Ambassador for the Pacific, was widely recognised for his advocacy at a time when stigma surrounding HIV remained widespread.
He consistently used his influence to promote open dialogue, challenge discrimination and support responses grounded in human rights.
His leadership extended to policy reforms, including his role during the enactment of Fiji’s HIV/AIDS Act in 2011, and efforts to remove HIV-related travel restrictions.
UNAIDS said his work went beyond policy, noting his engagement with communities, schools and people living with HIV to raise awareness and strengthen prevention efforts.
“His voice will be deeply missed, but his legacy will endure in the continued effort to end HIV and ensure that no one is left behind,” the organisation said.
UNAIDS extended condolences to his family and the people of Fiji.
