DEVO Babas have dedicated their victory at the 50th edition of the Fiji Bitter Marist 7s to their late teammate Police Constable Peniasi Racagi.

Head coach Viliame Ratute said the emotional motivation carried the team throughout the tournament, culminating in a hard-fought win over Nationwide Army Green in the final at the HFC Bank Stadium on Saturday.

“It was a good game against a strong Army side,” Ratute said.

“After our semi-final against the Yaro Chiefs, we reminded the boys that Army was the team to beat this year, so we had to lift physically and mentally.”

He praised his players for executing their game plan under pressure, particularly where discipline, structure and fitness proved decisive.

What made the victory even more remarkable was the team’s late inclusion in the tournament.

Ratute shared that Devo Babas were not initially preparing for the Marist 7s, as their focus was on an overseas tour.

“We were preparing for our tour to defend our title in Papua New Guinea and were the last team to register for the tournament after we were requested to participate as defending champion,” he said.

Despite limited preparation, the Babas rose to the occasion, with a blend of new and experienced players stepping up.

Ratute highlighted the contribution of senior players, including two based overseas, who returned for the Fiji Bitter Marist 7s to support the team.

“Our message is simple — when players secure overseas contracts, they should come and give back to the club. That’s what those boys did,” he added.

The team now shifts focus to their next assignment, as they prepare to defend their title at the upcoming NiuPower KMHL Sports Tok 7s tournament next month.
