FIJI’S ability to produce its own food is no longer just an economic advantage, it is increasingly being viewed as a matter of national sovereignty.

Lands Minister Filimoni Vosarogo shared this while commending Grace Road Group for its continued investment in Fiji’s agricultural and commercial sectors, particularly against the backdrop of rising global instability.

“In a world of ongoing conflict, disrupted shipping routes, and volatile global prices, the ability to produce our own food is no longer just an economic advantage, it is a matter of sovereignty,” Mr Vosarogo said.

“Investments in local farming, from rice to fresh produce, are investments in our national resilience.

“They mean that when global supply chains are restricted at choke points or become expensive, we remain better positioned to feed our people and maintain stability.”

Mr Vosarogo also acknowledged Grace Road’s role in supporting local agriculture through direct partnerships with farmers, describing it as a sustainable model that strengthens supply chains.

“Their partnership with local farmers, creating reliable markets by purchasing crops directly, is a model that gives farmers confidence, encourages production, and strengthens the supply chains that underpin our entire economy.”

Beyond agriculture, he pointed to the company’s broader contributions to infrastructure and community development, including retail and service hubs designed to meet growing urban demand.

“These are not just commercial projects; they are nodes of urban development that improve quality of life.”

He added that the company’s operations have also had a significant social impact, particularly through employment opportunities.

“The employment of approximately 1000 people, from frontline retail to management and agriculture, represents livelihoods, stability, and the building of critical skills for Fijian families.”
