Lelean Memorial School’s U17 team have secured their place in the finals of the Southern Zone Fiji Secondary Schools Rugby League competition after a gritty 22-16 victory over Lami High School at the St Marcelln grounds in Vatuwaqa on Saturday.

LMS head coach Qio Filipe acknowledged the challenge they faced in the semi-finals but praised his team for their determination and effort in clinching the win.

“During our preparation we knew we would be playing a team ranked higher than us and Lami was tough, scoring the opening try,” he said.

“But I thank the almighty for the efforts the boys put in, they listened to our instructions, played as a team and executed what we had planned for in school.”

Midway through the second half, LHS launched a comeback, scoring two consecutive tries to take a 16-12 lead.

LMS team captain Kaveni Tuisavura said his message to the players remained steadfast despite the challenging situation.

“My message to the boys didn’t change. I just told them whatever level they were in just to take up a notch and remember our families and supporters who gave up so much to see us come this far,” he said.

Looking ahead to the final, Tuisavura highlighted areas for improvement.

“Our communication needs improving; we also have to up our defence and ensure our passes actually stick,” he explained.

Having competed in the U15 grade previously, this will be the side’s first final in the Southern Zone.
