A HIGH chief of the people.
These were the words used by Rewa chief Ro Naulu Mataitini to describe the late President Ratu Epeli Nailatikau, who passed away on Thursday night at the age of 85.
Joining the chorus of tributes for the late Statesman, Ro Naulu said Ratu Epeli remained accessible to the people despite being a President, a Speaker of the House, a Commander of the RFMF and a high chief.
“That is what set him apart,” said Ro Naulu.
“In many parts of the world, leaders are defined by distance — layers of protection, tightly managed appearances, carefully scripted encounters.
“Authority is often measured by how far removed one is from the public. Ratu Epeli offered a different example.
“His presence in everyday spaces spoke of quiet confidence in himself, in his office, and in the people he served.
“He did not need to perform power. He carried it lightly.”
Ro Naulu said he personally experienced this “accessibility” firsthand when an opportunity to serve in South Lebanon fell through.
“Even in conversation, there was a human touch.
“He was known for a mischievous wit — the kind of cheeky humour familiar in Fijian settings.
“It disarmed, connected, and reminded people that behind the titles stood a man who understood the rhythms of ordinary life.
“He did not need to perform power. He carried it lightly.”
