A woman and a child have died in two separate road accidents in the Western Division early this morning, raising fresh concerns about road safety.
The first incident occurred in Martintar, Nadi, shortly after 5am. It is alleged that a taxi driven by a man in his 30s collided with another vehicle, causing him to lose control. The taxi reportedly veered off the road and struck a woman who was standing by the roadside. She died at the scene.
In the second incident, a 9-year-old girl lost her life after she was hit by a vehicle driven by a woman along Korovuto. The child was reportedly walking along the roadside when the accident occurred. She was rushed to Nadi Hospital, where medical officials later confirmed her death.
Police have indicated that both drivers will be questioned as investigations continue into the circumstances surrounding the accidents.
The national road death toll now stands at 11, compared to 7 for the same period last year.
Authorities say the tragic incidents, believed to be linked to driver negligence, highlight the urgent need for motorists to remain vigilant and practise safe driving at all times.
