A PROPOSAL for the establishment of a dedicated national rehabilitation committee to assist victims of climate change and natural disasters has been put forward by former Sabeto district representative Ilisoni Galala.
Speaking during public consultations on the Review of the Mining Act 1965 in Sabeto, Nadi, on Tuesday, Mr Galala shared his deep concern for those living on the front lines of environmental degradation.
“I really feel sorry for people in the coastal line, hilly areas who experience soil erosion and their villages have been washed away,” he said.
Mr Galala said without structured government programs to rehabilitate displaced citizens, the struggle for survival in disaster-prone areas becomes a waste of time.
“I have proposed that and I’ll make sure this government considers this and I will also raise this issue during the budget consultations.”
The former district representative emphasised that the value of the Fijian people must outweigh any other national interest.
“People are the most important asset, whether you are from Sabeto or elsewhere. We are human beings and we must enjoy life.”
Mr Galala confirmed he has engaged other ministries with his proposal.
