Labasa Airport will reopen this Saturday following the completion of major runway strengthening works by Fiji Airports.

The six-week project, funded by the World Bank through the Na Vualiku Project, involved upgrading the runway pavement to meet required operational standards and improve aircraft movement.

The upgraded runway is expected to deliver safer, more efficient and reliable services for passengers, airlines and cargo operations, strengthening connectivity across the Northern Division.

Despite the reopening, airport operations will continue from the temporary terminal while work progresses on a new terminal facility.

Fiji Airports chief executive Mesake Nawari said the project marks an important investment in the North’s aviation infrastructure.

“The completion of the runway strengthening works at Labasa Airport ensures safer and more reliable operations, while also supporting economic growth and connectivity for the Northern Division,” he said.

Mr Nawari also acknowledged the patience of stakeholders and the Labasa community during construction.

Fiji Airports thanked key partners involved in the project, including the mataqali Nabukarabe of Nakama Village, Flame Tree Developments, the Labasa business community and stakeholders in Savusavu.

The authority says it will continue working with Government to improve infrastructure and service delivery for people in Vanua Levu.
