NATIONAL airline Fiji Airways has announced the introduction of BYD Shark 6 vehicles into its ground operations fleet to support broader efforts to adopt more sustainable practices across its operations, while maintaining efficiency and service excellence. The BYD Shark 6 is a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle that combines performance with lower emissions, making it well-suited for operational use in and around airport environments, Fiji Airways said in a statement yesterday.
Its integration into the airline’s fleet marked a practical move toward reducing fuel consumption and supporting its long-term sustainability goals.
Fiji Airways managing director and chief executive officer Paul Scurrah said the introduction reflects the airline’s ongoing commitment to responsible growth.
“As Fiji’s national airline, we recognise the important role we play in protecting our environment for future generations.
“The introduction of the new electric vehicles is another step forward in our journey to operate more sustainably while continuing to deliver safe, reliable, and world-class service,” he said.
According to the airline, the new vehicles can operate in pure electric mode for up to 100 kilometres, making them particularly suitable for airside operations where short trips and stop-start driving are common, helping to reduce fuel consumption and emissions.
The vehicles also provide reliable and efficient transport for engineering teams between aircraft stands, hangars and operational areas, supporting the fast-paced nature of airside maintenance.
“This is about making practical, meaningful changes to how we operate every day,” Mr Scurrah added.
“Introducing more fuel-efficient and lower-emission vehicles into our fleet is one way we can reduce our impact while continuing to support our operational needs.”
The vehicles will also support training activities at the Fiji Airways Aviation Academy while showcasing how modern technologies are being integrated into everyday airline operations.
Fiji Airways is also prioritising the adoption of plug-in hybrid and fully electric vehicles, where suitable models are available in Fiji, with conventional fossil fuel vehicles to be progressively phased out as the fleet is renewed.
The initiative aligns with the airline’s broader vision of responsible growth and environmental stewardship, with sustainability embedded across its operations and customer experience.
