THE Tourism Action Group (TAG) will have strategies that will safeguard Fiji’s tourism in the future, said Tourism Fiji chief executive officer Dr Paresh Pant.

Tourism Fiji had recently announced the reactivation of its Tourism Action Group, a body formed to prepare for an ongoing global crisis.

In an interview in Nadi yesterday, Dr Pant said TAG brings together the various tourism minds as one so they could plan together as a collective.

“The immediate focus is looking at the April to October period, is to give reassurance to the booking that are already there,” he said.

“And then onwards from October to April because of other destinations that have been affected far more badly.

“In terms of Southeast Asia in particular as they have lost quite a lot of bookings because of their connectivity with the middle eastern carriers.

“They will mount a recovery campaign of their own, but they will be targeting the very resource markets that we target.

“So, what is our response going to be like?

“And we can collectively start thinking about it now in having a plan very soon to be able to roll it out and capture that latent demand that might go to Asia to then redirect it to Fiji as we will be protecting our industry moving forward.”

Dr Pant confirmed the committee would be meeting later this week.

TAG is chaired by Tour Managers Group managing director Damend Gounder, and includes Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Tourism and Civil Aviation Viliame Gavoka, Fiji Airways chief sales and marketing officer Kamal Haer, Fiji Hotel and Tourism Association chief executive officer Fantashia Lockington, Permanent Secretary for Tourism and Civil Aviation Salaseini Daunabuna, Permanent Secretary for Finance Shri Goundar, FNPF chief investment officer Naibuka Saune and Dr Pant.
