THE Kaunikuila Basketball Club is all set to host its first tournament of 2026 organised by the Central Basketball Association, scheduled to take place from March 26-28 at Vodafone Hall A in Suva.

Dubbed as the McDonald’s Kaunikuila Basketball Cup, the competition will feature a total of six women’s teams and twelve men’s teams from Suva and Nadi.

Club president Ben Naisau emphasised the significance of this event, providing players with a valuable opportunity to engage in competitive play while fostering values of unity and sportsmanship
within the basketball community.

Acknowledging the contributions of McDonald’s and other supporting sponsors, along with players and fans, the tournament is set to deliver three days of rapid-paced and fiercely competitive
basketball action.

“Fans and spectators can expect high intensity basketball, fast-paced action, and a very competitive atmosphere,” said Naisau. “The teams coming in are well prepared and eager to prove themselves, so every game will be exciting to watch. It’s going to be a showcase of talent, team work, and passion for the sport.

He adds reflecting on a successful year in 2025, which included the hosting of two tournaments and a momentous international tour to New Caledonia, where the club achieved notable rankings in both the men’s and women’s divisions, the focus for 2026 is on building upon these accomplishments, enhancing performance, and nurturing player development.

“Heading into 2026, our aim is to build on that success, improve our performance, and continue growing while enjoying the game and developing our players. “The first competition of the year is
always important. “It sets the tone for the season and gives teams a benchmark to measure themselves.”

Naisau mentioned while the pressure is palpable when hosting the inaugural tournament, the club is steadfast in its commitment to rise to the challenge through unity, family support, and teamwork, laying a solid foundation for the year ahead.

“Together, let’s make the McDonald’s Kaunikuila Basketball Cup a memorable and successful event for everyone.”
