The future of Suva netball was on full display as emerging young talent lit up the courts during the Suva Primary Schools Netball Association quarter-finals at the Vodafone Arena yesterday.
Association president Elenoa Vadei said the competition marked a crucial stage in the season, with teams battling in both Tier One and Tier Two grades while selectors closely monitor players.
“We are having our quarterfinals and at the same time we are finalizing the selection of players who will represent Team Suva to Labasa for the National Primary Schools Netball tournament,” she said.
A total of 24 primary schools have participated this season, reflecting strong commitment from across the district.
Vadei described the support as “awesome”, with teachers, coaches and players working collectively to ensure a successful competition.
The growth at grassroots level has been particularly encouraging, especially among the youngest grades.
Vadei highlighted significant improvement in the under-9 division, noting that many players who previously competed above their age level were now excelling.
“Those girls who played up last year have really developed. They understand the game better now, and we are proud to see how well they are performing in the quarterfinals,” she said.
Having served as president for 15 years, Vadei has witnessed the steady rise of netball in Suva.
She said the pathway from primary school to higher levels was becoming clearer, with several former Suva representatives progressing to international ranks.
“We have seen several of our girls go on to become members of the national team. That shows the importance of strong grassroots development,” she said.
The competition began in the fourth week of the school term and has now reached its sixth week, with semifinals and finals scheduled for next week.
Vadei acknowledged financial challenges in organising the competition but expressed gratitude to sponsors for their continued support.
