Fuel shortage fears raised for maritime islands

Shipping operator Goundar Shipping Limited has raised alarm over an ongoing fuel shortage affecting Fiji’s outer islands, warning that the situation is disrupting essential services and putting lives at risk.

In a statement, the company said it had carried out three trips over the past two weeks to the Lau Group, including Rotuma, but repeatedly faced refusals from fuel suppliers to release fuel for customers along these routes.

The company described the situation as deeply concerning, noting that fuel is critical for sustaining livelihoods in maritime communities and ensuring emergency services, including the transfer of medical patients between islands.

Goundar Shipping questioned why fuel is not being released to vessels servicing the outer islands if there is sufficient supply available nationally, and has called on Government to urgently investigate the issue.

It also raised concerns that fuel supplies may be deliberately withheld, possibly in anticipation of price increases, and is urging authorities and fuel companies to provide clarity and transparency.

The company stressed that people in the maritime islands rely heavily on shipping services, warning that any prolonged disruption could have serious consequences for essential services and daily life.
