Mahatma Gandhi Memorial High School Intermediate Boys 4x100m team delivered one of the defining moments of the Coca-Cola Suva Zone One Athletics meet yesterday.

The MGM quartet delivered well storming to gold in the intermediate Boys 4×100 metres relay final.

The boys from Vatuwaqa executed near-perfect baton changes and blistering pace to edge out their rivals in a thrilling finish that brought the crowd to its feet.

With the stadium roaring, the anchor surged ahead in the final metres to seal victory, sparking jubilant celebrations among teammates and supporters.

But beyond the gold medal, the win carried deeper meaning.

The team dedicated their victory to Apisalomi Saukuru, their trusted taper who has recently secured a rugby league contract with the Bulldogs Rugby league club in Australia. Saukuru is expected to depart Fiji in June to begin the next chapter of his sporting journey.

Team captain Lawrence Fatiaki shared that though not on the track, Saukuru has been a constant presence behind the scenes—supporting the team through training, motivating them, and playing a key role in team morale throughout the season.

“This win is for Api, He’s been with us every day, pushing us and believing in us. We wanted to do this for him before he leaves,” Fatiaki said.

Fatiaki added that it was a win for the entire team, on and off the track and a fitting send-off for one of our own destined for bigger stages abroad.

Saukuru, shared his emotions as he crossed the finishing line to secure a gold during the 4x100m relay final.

“I’m proud of the boys,” Saukuru said.

“We all worked hard for this, and we deserve it.”

The victory not only adds to MGM’s proud athletics legacy but also highlights the strength of unity and teamwork within the team.
