DAV College Nabua delivered a powerful performance at the Suva Zone One athletics meet, not only improving their medal tally but also honoring the legacy of their late coach, Mr Atish Kumar.
In a remarkable turnaround from last year’s results, the school secured three gold medals, one silver, and one bronze over the two-day competition at the HFC Bank Stadium in Suva.
The achievement marks a significant milestone for the relatively small school, showcasing both resilience and growth.
Leading the charge was rising sprint star Kaveni Tomuse, who dominated the junior division 100m final on the opening day and returned even stronger to secure another gold in the 200m final on day two.
Tomuse’s performance mirrored his success from last year’s meet, where he also captured gold in both events.
Tomuse expressed his humility and gratitude.
“Firstly, I give thanks to the Almighty Lord for His provision and guidance, and also my coaches for having faith in me and giving their support,” he said.
Joining him in the winners’ circle was his teammate Daniel Prasad, who showcased endurance and determination to win gold in the 3000m event.
Despite their individual triumphs, both athletes emphasized that their victories carried deeper meaning.
They dedicated their medals to their former coach and teacher, the late Mr Atish Kumar, whose influence continues to inspire the team.
DAV College teacher and trainer Abhishek Chetty praised the athletes’ commitment and the significance of their achievement.
“I am really happy and grateful for my team for winning three gold, one silver and one bronze. It’s a very big achievement for a small school like us, and people also get to know us because of our performance in this two-day event,” he said.
Chetty echoed the athletes’ sentiments, adding that the team’s success was a tribute to Mr Kumar, the former PEMAC Head of Department, whose dedication helped shape the athletes’ journey.
For DAV College Nabua, this year’s performance was more than just medals—it was a statement of progress, unity, and remembrance.
