An investigation, into a workplace accident that claimed the life of a father, has already been conducted, says Labour Minister Agni Deo Singh.

Mr Singh said a team from Labasa had completed its assessment and a statement would be issued soon.

“We have already done our investigation. Our Labasa team have done their assessment. We will make a statement soon,” Mr Singh said.

His comments come as a family in Vunivau, Labasa grieve the loss of 47-year-old machine operator Ravinesh Prasad, who died from injuries he allegedly sustained during the accident.

Mr Prasad died on Monday last week at Labasa Hospital after he was allegedly injured at work the previous Friday. He has since been laid to rest.

For his brother, Abinesh Prasad, he is expecting justice.

“I am expecting justice for the passing of my brother,” he said.

Mr Prasad said the tragedy unfolded shortly after his brother arrived at work.

“Early Friday morning, he left home to go to work. He usually starts work at 8 am. About 8.15am, he got injured.”

He said the family had been told a piece of timber got stuck in the machine.

“The only thing we heard was that a timber got stuck in the machine, and he was trying to get it out. While he was trying to remove the timber, the machine hit his head.

“When he shouted and fell, two Fijian boys rushed to pick him up and took him to the hospital,” he claimed.

Mr Prasad was the eldest in the family and left behind three sons.
