NAKASALEKA, Kadavu sprinter Karalaini Koro of Suva Grammar School was a happy young lady yesterday when she won the senior girls 200m final of the Coca-Cola Games Suva Zone Two meet.
Koro crossed the finish line ahead of 2026 Suva Zone Two blue ribbon winner Lusiana Lewasewa of Lomary Secondary School, who came in second.
For the young lady from Kadavu, she expressed her elation at winning the event in light of the tough yet determined road she took to ensure she finished on top at the zone athletics meet.
“After this race, I really feel so happy and I would just like to thank the Lord for giving me the strength and without Him I wouldn’t be here today and to win this race.”
She faced stiff competition from her opponents once the starter’s gun fired away, and as she careened onto the 200m bend and line in for the home stretch, she kept a steady pace as she advanced past her opponents to cross the finish line with her hand pointed above.
However in competing against Lewasewa, she said competing with her previously made her nervous for yesterday’s race.
“I know for the past few years, we have always run together so I just stayed positive in this run and it was through God that I won this race today.”
Koro helps Suva Grammar retain the winning title for the event, after Claudie David did so in last year’s Suva Zone Two athletics meet and Koro admitted it was tough.
“It was tough because all the training and sacrifices were tough and it was not that easy so it was only through God.”
She said it had been tough preparing herself for this zone meet after the school’s interhouse meet with only a week to prepare for the zone meet.
She is also looking forward to competing at this year’s Coca-Cola Games, also known as the Fiji Finals.
