There was nothing stopping the blue ribbon winners of the Coca-Cola Games Suva Zone Two competition from crossing the finish line first yesterday.
Paula Vonolagi of Suva Grammar School and Lusiana Lewasewa of Lomary Secondary School were crowned the new champions of the senior boys and girls 100m respectively, in heated dashes on the track at the HFC Bank Stadium in Suva.
Vonolagi finished with a time of 10.57s, an onward progression to his preparations towards the Coca-Cola Games next month.
Lewasewa sped past notable contenders to finish first with a time of 13.27s, a major upset for the Serua-based school once famed for podium finishes in national meets.
Vonolagi had to overcome a hamstring injury to prepare for a new season of athletics and while the journey in getting back to shape has not been easy, he says he is thankful to the Man above for being a guiding force of strength through it.
“I would like to thank the Lord for looking after my life, there are many things I have been going through however in running today, there are not there anymore,” Vonolagi said.
For Lewasewa, this is a major achievement for her since she and her fellow athletes only had a week to prepare for the zone athletics meet.
When asked how preparations were in the lead-up to the meet, she admitted it was difficult.
“I would like to thank my mother for everything she has done every day, being raised up in trying times and for waking me up every morning to train and for that I am so thankful.”
The Suva Zone Two will end today.
