Fiji is set to introduce a national container deposit system to improve recycling rates and reduce waste entering the environment.

Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka highlighted the initiative at the VAKA Forum, explaining that beverage containers will carry a refundable deposit.

“Experience from many countries shows that such systems significantly improve recycling rates and reduce waste entering the environment,” Mr Rabuka said.

The pilot program is already underway in Suva, Sigatoka, and Lautoka, enabling residents to return bottles and cans for cash.

He said the system was part of Fiji’s broader waste management strategy.

“If a city is serious about addressing its waste management challenges, then its knowledge must inform national leadership making. Maintaining clean coastlines, healthy rivers, and vibrant ecosystems is an investment in the long-term sustainability of our economy, especially for tourism and agriculture,” he said.

He said the scheme was designed to complement grassroots recycling efforts and align with legislative reforms currently under development.

Mr Rabuka said the scheme requires strong partnerships between communities, civil society, the private sector, and your government.
