Opposition MP Semi Koroilavesau in Parliament this week – FIJI PARLT

Opposition MP Semi Koroilavesau has criticised individuals who profess Christian values while promoting ethnic division, warning that such behaviour undermines national unity.

Speaking in Parliament during the debate on the President’s Address, Koroilavesau said Fiji must reject those who use religion as a cover while spreading hatred.

“It is the same upon those who claim to be Christians on Sunday but spend the rest of the week spreading the rot of ethnic hatred,” he said.

“How can you profess the love of Christ while your heart is a vessel of division?”

Koroilavesau said those who promote ethnic hostility while claiming to defend indigenous interests are harming the country’s progress.

“You are not protecting the iTaukei, you are holding us back. You are a hateful few who stand in the way of a blessed nation,” he said.

He warned that the continued use of ethnic politics has cost Fiji decades of progress.

“The cruelest part of our 152-year history has been the calculated division sown between us iTaukei and our brothers and sisters of Indian descent,” Koroilavesau said.

“This hatred was not born here. It was imported to keep us weak.”

The opposition MP urged leaders and communities to reject fear and division as the country approaches the next general election.

“We must reject those who profit from fear,” he said.

Koroilavesau added that Fiji’s future depends on leaders and citizens choosing unity, transparency and responsible leadership over division.
