FROM the lush greenery of Navolau No.1 in Ra to the glittering ballroom of the Grand Pacific Hotel, Alena Berauwa’s passion for plants has blossomed into national recognition.
The 38-year-old mother of five was named Nursery Farmer of the Year at the Women in Agriculture Symposium after turning a small backyard nursery into a thriving business.
What began in 2023 with sandalwood seedlings has grown into a nursery producing fruit trees, native plants and mangroves for the Ministry of Forestry and Ministry of Agriculture. Now Berauwa dreams of expanding Alena’s Nursery across Fiji.
“Start small and you’ll grow, just like my trees,” she says, urging women to embrace farming.
