On any given morning along the Queen’s Highway, near the bus stand by the Warwick Fiji, the inviting aroma of freshly baked pastries drifts through the air.

On the bus stop bench, with homemade treats by her side, sits Maopa Rokonai. This hardworking mother of seven believes honest work is rewarding.

Originally from Nauria Village in Ra, Maopa is married to Serua Island and resides in Talenaua.

For her, selling pastries means more than just making a living. Pastry sale ensures her family enjoys a secure future.

Each day, she prepares her toothsome goodies with care so that passersby may stop for a quick bite, often drawn not only by the food but by Maopa’s welcoming smile.

The small business looks simple. Yet it plays a significant role in supporting her household.

“I believe there is nothing that women cannot do,” Maopa said.

“That is the range of possibilities we have at our disposal. You just have to trust yourself and invest your time in what you do best.”

Her pastry sales are just one part of her efforts. At home, she also runs a small canteen, creating another stream of income to support daily expenses. For Maopa, relying on only one source of income is risky business.

“You have ten fingers,” she said.

“They represent your possible sources of income and the possible money you can make. Don’t depend on only one revenue source, explore ways of earning more money.”

Maopa said the burden of financial responsibilities faced by many indigenous Fijian families could be demanding and overwhelming.

From school fees and church contributions to family and community obligations, the need for steady income is constant.

“If you work hard, you will earn more. Use the talents God gave you to be a source of blessings to your family and village,” she said.

“To rural women, get out of the house and look at what you can do with what you have. Don’t depend entirely on your husbands. If you have raw talents, make use of them.”
