Agriculture remains Fiji’s largest employer, survey shows

The Employment and Unemployment Survey 2023–2024 indicates that Fiji’s workforce is spread across a diverse range of occupations, with agriculture remaining the largest source of employment.

According to the survey, Skilled Agricultural, Forestry and Fishery Workers form the biggest occupational group, employing 54,691 people, including 45,870 men and 8,821 women.

The figures highlight the continued importance of agriculture and primary production in Fiji’s economy, with the sector largely dominated by male workers.

The Service and Sales Workers category is the second largest, with 53,470 workers, including 30,365 men and 23,105 women.

Elementary Occupations, which include low-skilled manual and basic service jobs, accounted for 35,236 workers, comprising 21,568 men and 13,668 women.

The Craft and Related Trades Workers category recorded 33,426 workers, with 24,596 men and 8,830 women, reflecting the male-dominated nature of construction, carpentry and mechanical trades.

The Professional category accounted for 32,990 workers, including 17,969 men and 15,021 women, showing stronger female representation compared with several other occupational groups, particularly in fields such as education, health and administration.

Meanwhile, Technicians and Associate Professionals made up 23,717 workers, while Clerical Support Workers totalled 19,971, with near gender parity in administrative and office support roles.

The survey also recorded 26,395 workers in the Plant and Machine Operators and Assemblers category, a group heavily dominated by men and largely associated with industrial and transport operations.
