The Soqosoqo Vakamarama of Macuata has called for the establishment of another aged-care home in the North, citing reports that existing facilities around the country have reached full capacity.
President Adi Samanunu Katonivere said it was concerning that many elderly people had limited care options because most homes were already full.
“It is very sad when we talk about it,” she said.
“Many of the homes are already full, and there is no other place where elderly people can be taken to be cared for.”.
Adi Samanunu said a new aged-care facility in the North would help families who were forced to send elderly relatives far away for support.
She said an aged-home in Bua would make it easier for families to stay connected with their loved ones.
“This would mean elderly people would not have to be sent all the way to Suva or other care homes, far from their families.
“If there were a home here in the North, it would be more suitable because relatives would have easier access to visit them instead of travelling long distances.”
She said the growing demand for elderly care highlighted the need for stronger support systems for senior citizens.
She also expressed concern over reports that some elderly parents were not being properly cared for by their own children.
“It is really sad to learn that some children do not properly take care of their elderly parents.
“We are only in this world for a short time, and children who still have their elderly parents should do their best to look after them. If they do not look after them, then who will?”
She said caring for elderly parents should come from genuine love and a sense of responsibility.
