A pig hunting trip into the hills of Abaca in Lautoka on Sunday turned tragic after 38-year-old Asish Anand was swept away by strong current while trying to cross a river on horseback.

The electrician’s body was found early yesterday morning after police officers, with concerned family and friends, conducted a search for the 38-year-old who was last seen being pulled by strong currents.

His father Anand Kumar said Asish was accompanying a friend to hunt for wild pigs.

“He did not need to go out hunting but because his friend, who is a poor guy and needed help, he went along with him,” said Mr Kumar.

“He goes every weekend but this time around I did not know he would not come back.”

Mr Kumar said he last saw his son on Sunday morning.

“I dropped him off at his friend’s place and they went on horseback from there.

“Then I called him when it started raining and he said they were making their way back because they could not find any pigs.

“That was the last time I heard his voice.”

Mr Kumar said his son’s death has affected his family and their community.

“He was a very helpful guy. He helped anyone who needed help with electrical work in their home. He did it for free and without asking for anything.

“When we announced his passing on Facebook, many people called and wanted to help our family.

“That was because of Asish and the kind of heart he had.”

A post-mortem examination on the 38-year-old will be carried out later this week.
