Fiji lost their second pool match at the Vancouver Sevens yesterday, narrowly going down 17–14 to Argentina after a late try denied them a crucial win.
The Osea Kolinisau coached side got off to a flying start with speedster Viwa Naduvalo crossing for the opening try in the third minute, which he converted himself to take Fiji to a 7–0 lead.
Argentina replied immediately with Pedro De Haro scoring in the fifth minute to close the gap to 7–5.
Terio Veilawa extended Fiji’s lead in the sixth minute with a wonderfully executed try after which he added the extras to push the score to 14–5.
For much of the match, Fiji appeared in control, but Argentina staged a strong comeback just before halftime, with tries from Santino Zangara and Luciano Gonzalez turning the match around.
A late second-half try by Argentina, combined with a crucial conversion by De Haro, sealed the 17–14 victory for the South Americans, denying Fiji a vital win in the pool stages.
