Born and raised in Nadi, Narend Kumar’s career in hospitality spans over three and a half decades. A journey marked by resilience, innovation and an unwavering commitment to service excellence.
Starting from humble beginnings, he steadily rose through the ranks, not by chasing titles but by influencing industry practices and mentoring the professionals who now shape Fiji’s tourism landscape.
His legacy has been formally recognised, as Mr Kumar has been awarded the prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2025 ANZ Fiji Excellence in Tourism Awards, cementing his place as one of Fiji’s most influential hospitality leaders.
When asked about the honour, Mr Kumar’s response reflected the philosophy that has defined his career:
“I am deeply humbled to receive this recognition. For me, hospitality has always been about creating memorable experiences for our guests while nurturing the talent around me.
“This award is not just mine. It belongs to every colleague and team member who has been part of this journey.”
It’s this people-first approach that sets him apart. While many leaders measure success in metrics, Mr Kumar has consistently prioritised the human dimension.
From pioneering employee development programs to championing sustainability initiatives rooted in community wellbeing.
Tanoa Hotel Group area general manager, Mr Kumar’s impact extends far beyond the group. His visionary leadership has helped modernise hospitality standards across Fiji, enhancing guest experiences while supporting sustainable tourism practices.
The ongoing transformation of Tanoa International Hotel stands as a testament to his commitment. Each renovation reflects his philosophy that excellence is not a destination but an ongoing journey.
His influence ripples through the Fiji Hotel and Tourism Association, where he has championed skills development pathways for young Fijians entering the industry and fostered a culture of continuous improvement across the sector.
Tanoa Hotel Group managing director Rohit Reddy, and son of the late Mr Y. P. Reddy, extended his congratulations:
“Narend’s dedication and leadership have been instrumental in shaping our Fiji properties. His influence is clearly visible in the ongoing transformation of Tanoa International Hotel.
His passion inspires everyone around him and this award reflects his lifetime of service.”
Tanoa Hotel Group director Kamini Reddy added:
“Narend has always led by example. His commitment to excellence, mentorship and fostering a positive culture has left an indelible mark on both our team and the industry. We are proud to celebrate his achievements.”
This recognition marks a significant milestone for Tanoa Hotel Group. The company is now the only hospitality group in Fiji to have received the Lifetime Achievement Award twice.
The first was bestowed upon the late founder, Mr Y. P. Reddy, whose vision and values continue to guide the organisation.
Mr Kumar’s award represents the continuation of that legacy.
Mr Kumar’s story embodies the spirit of Fijian hospitality: warmth, professionalism and a genuine commitment to making every guest feel valued.
As he continues to mentor the next generation of hospitality leaders, his legacy serves as a reminder of what vision, dedication and integrity can achieve over a lifetime devoted to service.
The Lifetime Achievement Award is not simply a recognition of the past but is an affirmation that his influence will continue to shape Fiji’s tourism sector for years to come.
