PRIME Minister Sitiveni Rabuka is urging Fijians to make better use of their land as a practical way to ease the rising cost of living and strengthen food security.

Speaking at Matakunea in Cakaudrove recently, he reminded landowners that land remains one of Fiji’s most valuable resources and can provide both food and income if properly used.

“Every day we hear people talking about the rise in the cost of living – make use of your land,” he said.

Mr Rabuka encouraged families to plant their own vegetables, crops and fruits, saying agriculture and self-sufficiency could help households and communities become more resilient during challenging times.

He said coordinated and cooperative efforts among landowners can lead to sustainable development and long-term prosperity.

Meanwhile, Finance Minister Esrom Immanuel yesterday said that while tensions escalate between the US and Iran, and the situation posed real risks to the global economy, there is no immediate cause for panic.

“Fiji currently has adequate foreign exchange reserves, which provide an important buffer against external shocks,” he said.

He said the government’s social protection frameworks are flexible enough to respond with mitigating measures if global conditions worsen.

Government is monitoring the situation and will keep the public informed as developments unfold.
