THE phrase “when the tough gets going, the going gets tougher” would best describe how the Fiji Airways Fiji men’s 7s team needs to ward off any contenders for the top spot in the HSBC SVNS standings when the Vancouver 7s kicks off this weekend.
Fiji currently leads the standings with 70 points, while South Africa falls in second with 66 points and New Zealand with 62.
The Osea Kolinisau-coached team is grouped in Pool B with France, Australia and Argentina.
The three teams occupy the fourth to sixth places on the standings respectively.
And with this in mind, Kolinisau affirms it will not be easy having to maintain their leading streak as the series will near its conclusion.
“Every team is looking forward to this week, I guess it’s the last chance for you to get to win a tournament in the final leg and everybody is going to come out hard, especially with the points close to each other,” Kolinisau said.
Even at the top of the table, he stresses it is a daunting task having to defend itself against the looming threats posed by those occupying the table with them.
“It’s not easy being number one; there’s a lot of things that can go wrong,” he admitted.
“Something we’re focusing on a lot is trying to make sure we’re consistent with our attitude as well, on what we’ve bene doing and make sure we’re pushing the boys hard because one thing I told the boys is your potential can’t come out if you’re not pushed to your limit.”
