Police have received a report of individuals allegedly gathering to consume alcohol and engage in illegal activities on vacant land along Vesi Crescent in the Waiyavi Industrial Area, Lautoka.
The complaint follows concerns raised by nearby businesses claiming the site, which includes a run-down shelter, has become a hotspot for drunkards.
Police spokesperson Ana Naisoro said two officers were dispatched to the location but those gathered had already left.
“DPC West has directed the officer-in-charge Lautoka to try and identify the owner of the property and town council to discuss how they can secure that property to avoid being used for illegal activities,” she said.
Mannat Investments Pte Ltd executive director Ashika Kumar alleged the land belonged to a pest control company.
“The vacant land … has increasingly become a gathering spot for drunkards who are drinking and smoking there openly, even during broad daylight,” Ms Kumar said.
She claimed staff felt unsafe reporting to work early and alleged incidents of abusive behaviour.
Questions sent to the pest control company’s executive director remain unanswered.
