A month after a diver died in the North while using oxygen tanks, Fisheries Minister Alitia Bainivalu has issued a strong reminder that underwater breathing apparatus (UBA) remains illegal under the law.
The warning comes despite the recent lifting of the ban on harvesting beche-de-mer.
“Under the Fisheries Act, this is banned, it is prohibited,” Ms Bainivalu said.
She stressed that while fishermen were now allowed to harvest sea cucumber, they must do so through free diving only and not with the assistance of UBA equipment.
The recent fatality has reignited concerns about the risks associated with deep diving and the improper use of breathing gear.
Ms Bainivalu said the Government’s decision to maintain the ban was aimed at safeguarding lives and ensuring sustainable fishing practices.
She warned that those caught breaching the law would face the full force of enforcement authorities.
