THE Tailevu Rugby Football Union has announced decisive actions against Korocawiri (Ovea) Rugby Club and Natakali Rugby Club following an altercation during their Semi-Final match at the 2026 Tailevu rugby 10s tournament held last Saturday, February 28 at Ratu Cakobau Park in Nausori.
In an official statement, Tailevu Rugby Union President Joseph Rodan Snr acknowledged that while incidents and risks are part of sport, clubs and supporters must face challenges with positive behaviour both on and off the field.
He confirmed that after a meeting involving the Games Coordinator, Games Committee, Tailevu Referee Association, and Executive Committee representatives, it was determined that the match would be awarded to Natakali Rugby Club, as Korocawiri (Ovea) Rugby Club abandoned the game approximately one minute before full time while trailing.
“Both clubs will receive a cash fine and a final written warning. Any recurrence of similar misconduct will result in termination or expulsion from all competitions administered by the Tailevu Rugby Football Union,” Rodan confirmed.
He emphasised the importance of the clubs in youth development and community engagement through rugby, noting role of sports in fostering discipline, unity, and positive social pathways.
The union will guide and advise the clubs to adhere to World Rugby Values and Code of Conduct, with official letters issued to the clubs on Monday, March 2, 2026.
The Tailevu Rugby Union also expressed gratitude to the Fiji Police Force and the Forces Training Group Rugby Team for their presence and support in maintaining order during the incident.
Responding to the incident, Fiji Rugby Union Board Chairman Mr. John Sanday reinforced the core values of rugby nationally.
“Rugby in Fiji is more than just a sport; it is a guiding pillar of discipline and a powerful force for positive change in the lives of our people. Behavior that undermines these values is not wanted, nor will it be accepted,” Sanday stated.
Mr. Sanday confirmed that the Fiji Rugby Union respects the Tailevu Rugby Union’s internal investigation and disciplinary process but will issue a formal reminder to all provincial unions emphasizing that such conduct has no place in the game.
He urged all stakeholders to work together to ensure rugby venues remain safe and respectful environments reflecting the true spirit of Fijian rugby.
The Tailevu Rugby Union remains committed to upholding discipline and respect while fostering the continued development of rugby in the region.
