THE tough realities of his rugby journey have forged the determination behind Fiji Airways Fiji men’s sevens breakout star Nacani Boginisoko, driving him to fight relentlessly to secure his place in the national squad.

The Naivakarauniniu, Sanima, Kadavu native, who shares maternal links to Nadroga, worked at Lautoka Wharf, balancing a demanding routine of dropping off and picking up fishermen at dawn and dusk to support his young family prior to his successful international sevens debut.

The struggles and sacrifices he made while pursuing his rugby dream with the Dominion Brothers team have made Boginisoko deeply grateful for the opportunity to don the national jumper—a privilege he must continuously fight for if he is to retain his place in the Osea Kolinisau-coached side.

Despite a promising debut, the 26-year-old is determined to improve his performance for the upcoming HSBC Vancouver and New York legs.

“I’m not focused too much on my performance from Singapore and Perth since there are a number of tournaments remaining in the competition,” Boginisoko said.

“Coach has asked me to keep working hard since I’ve yet to reach my full potential and to better my performance in Vancouver and New York.”

Meanwhile, head coach Osea Kolinisau is focused on maintaining the team’s consistent performances over the next two legs, believing this is critical to building a winning culture within the squad.

“Consistency is something we want in all our national teams; we cannot be talking about consistency if one week we finish in the top three and the next week we finish at the bottom,” he emphasised.

“Being consistent is critical in establishing a championship mentality amongst our players.”
