The Suva Magistrates Court will decide tomorrow whether former journalist Charlie Charters’ application to vary his bail conditions to travel to Australia for work will be granted.

The matter was heard this morning before Magistrate Shageeth Somaratne.

Defence lawyer Seforan Fatiaki assured the court that his client will return to Fiji on or before March 30 to answer his criminal charges.

He said Mr Charters has provided two sureties — his brother and a family friend — along with a cash bail of $2500.

He has also provided a letter from Mr Charters’ employer stating that his presence in Australia is required, as he serves as the company’s head of sales.

However, FIAC prosecutor Rusiate Doidoi strongly objected to the application, arguing that there is a high risk of Mr Charters absconding.

The ruling will be delivered at 10.30 am.
