The Fiji Rugby Union (FRU) has acknowledged an incident during the semi-final match between Korocawiri (Ovea) Rugby Club and Natakali Rugby Club at the Tailevu Rugby 10s Tournament, held at Ratu Cakobau Park on Saturday, 28 February 2026.

The FRU said Tailevu Rugby Union, as the tournament organiser, has addressed the matter directly with the teams involved.

Individuals identified as participating in the brawl will face disciplinary action from the Tailevu Rugby Union, a process the FRU said it respects and supports.

However, the FRU said it was necessary, as the national governing body, to remind all rugby communities of the values that define the sport.

The FRU does not condone such behaviour, stating it contradicts rugby’s core principles, particularly respect and discipline.

FRU Board Chairman John Sanday said the organisation had a responsibility to speak out.

“While we respect the process being undertaken by the Tailevu Rugby Union, we have a duty to speak out clearly on this issue,” Mr Sanday said.

“Rugby in Fiji is more than just a sport; it is a guiding pillar of discipline and a powerful force for positive change in the lives of our people. Behaviour that undermines these values is not wanted, nor will it be accepted.”

Mr Sanday confirmed the FRU will issue a formal reminder to all provincial unions nationwide, reinforcing that such conduct has no place in the game.

“Our safeguarding rules are in place for the safety and wellbeing of players, officials and spectators. We must work collectively to ensure our venues remain safe, respectful environments that reflect the true spirit of Fijian rugby,” he said.

The FRU has urged administrators, players and supporters to work together to promote a disciplined and positive rugby culture across the country.
