BA Town was in clean-up mode yesterday morning as floodwaters from Severe Tropical Cyclone Urmil left mud and debris across the town.
Speaking to The Fiji Times, kava vendor Birendra Kumar described the disruption to his business and the ongoing recovery efforts.
“There was no damage with our kava because we took it all home,” Mr Kumar said.
“But today’s business sales have been affected because it’s the first day of the week and we are closed. Most of the vendors were not affected because they took all their produce home. So, we are cleaning up our market stalls, and hopefully we will resume with our normal operations.”
Market vendors worked to clear their stock as floodwaters seeped through the main market area, extending to the bus station and other parts of town. Workers from Ba Town Council assisted in a thorough cleaning operation inside the Ba Municipal Market, helping vendors get back on their feet.
The clean-up marked the first step toward returning business operations to normal, with many vendors hoping to reopen fully today. Cyclone Urmil’s impact highlighted the resilience of the Ba community as they rallied to restore their livelihoods.
