Business in Nadi Town has resumed as normal after two days of inclement weather.
Speaking to The Fiji Times Nadi Chamber of Commerce & Industry president Lawrence Kumar said a lot of businesses had opted to close their operations on Sunday.
“Businesses in Nadi closed their operation for one day, keeping in mind the advisory issued by the NDMO,” Mr Kumar said.
“Not only that keeping in consideration the safety of the staff, employees, general public and security of the business as well.
“A lot of businesses have opted to close their business on Sunday where we had the Tropical Cyclone disturbance making its way through to Nadi.”
Mr Kumar said Tropical Cyclone Urmil did not cause severe damages to the township of Nadi.
“The cyclone did not make landfall on our town or else it could have been devasting for us.
“We have noticed a lot of flooding through local streams and rivers, and to the extent that Nadi river had been rising, the good part that the Nadi river did not burst its banks.
“Had the river burst its banks, there would have been a massive flooding into the township of Nadi.
“I think the township of Nadi had been sustained this time around, and some of the businesses have reopened today while some will reopen tomorrow (Tuesday).
“They (businesses) have made their internal assessment and have assessed if it’s feasible and viable for them to open up.
“Most of the businesses I have spoken to today have reopened up for the general public and have started to operate as normal.
“But obviously they are quite cautious of the situation that we have on hand right now, with the heavy rainfall experienced the past two days, we are mindful that flooding can happen anytime of the day.”
