Weather alerts remain in place across parts of the country as Tropical Disturbance 09F continues to influence conditions over Fiji.

The system is expected to develop into a tropical cyclone in the next 24 hours.

A heavy rain alert remains in force for the Western Division and Kadavu, while a strong wind alert is also active for land areas of the Western Division.

In its latest forecast to midnight tonight, the Met Service warns of occasional showers with isolated heavy falls and thunderstorms over the Western Division, interior and eastern parts of the larger islands, including the Navua–Suva–Nausori corridor, Tailevu–Naitasiri, Macuata, Cakaudrove and Southern Bua, as well as Taveuni, Lomaiviti, Lau, Kadavu, Yasawa and the Mamanuca group. Authorities caution that localised heavy rain may trigger flash flooding, particularly in low-lying and flood-prone areas.

Looking ahead to Saturday, conditions are expected to worsen in the Western Division, with occasional to periods of rain, heavy at times, and a few thunderstorms.

North to northwest winds may strengthen to average speeds of 40km/h with gusts up to 60km/h, producing rough to very rough seas.

The Fiji Meteorological Service is urging the public to remain alert, monitor official updates and take necessary precautions.
