THE heat is on at the Fiji Sports Council as its board reconvenes today to firm up an independent investigation into staff implicated in allegations of abuse of office.

Acting vice-chairman Peter Mazey said the board has been meeting for some time to finalise the terms of reference.

“Normally it would only cover one or two issues,” Mr Mazey said.

“But because of everything that has been raised including on social media, we have included absolutely everything.

“If there was anything that looked like an issue, it will be investigated. It’s to clear the air totally.”

He said two overseas-based companies are now being considered to carry out the probe – preference for an external investigator is to avoid conflicts of interest.

“That’s the biggest issue in Fiji because we’re all related.”

The investigation, expected to cost less than $50,000, will be funded by the council. A final decision on the firm is expected within 24 to 48 hours.

Mr Mazey confirmed the board has not yet discussed or decided on the suspension of chief executive Ratu Gilbert Vakalalabure, who is expected to go on annual leave soon.

Other staff mentioned in media reports will also fall under the scope of the probe, along with concerns over a reported media ban.

Board members Makarita Lenoa, Della Shaw-Elder and Semesa Karavaki attended yesterday’s meeting while chairman Peniasi Sokia Evo joined discussions via Zoom.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has not asked Youth Minister Jese Saukuru or Mr Vakalalabure to step down, despite mounting scrutiny over overseas travel expenses.

For now, both men remain in office, but pressure is building.
