The Government is actively working to dismantle the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC), Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka confirmed yesterday.
Speaking at Drano Village in Cakaudrove, Vanua Levu, Mr Rabuka said legislative and constitutional reforms are already in progress to remove the anti-corruption body.
“We already have investigative arms in government such as the police,” Mr Rabuka said.
“The Police Prosecution Division and the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions can handle the responsibilities currently carried out by FICAC. There is no need for a separate investigating and prosecuting arm.”
He warned that failing to act would continue what he described as a “bad decision made by the previous government”.
He confirmed the process will begin with reforming Bills, including amendments to the FICAC Act and relevant provisions of the Constitution.
“With FICAC, there will be two things that need to be amended: the Act and the provisions within the Constitution.”
The proposed changes will be presented to Parliament in due course.
