A former Cabinet minister and sitting People’s Alliance MP is facing public criticism after using a derogatory term on social media in reference to members of the public supporting the ongoing court case involving Charlie Charters.
The comment cannot be reproduced here because it contains offensive and inappropriate language.
The comment in the iTaukei language, posted on Facebook, did not target a political opponent or a public institution, but individuals who had expressed support for the legal process surrounding the case.
The post has since drawn strong reactions online, with critics questioning the conduct and language used by an elected representative.
Naulu Mataitini, a member of the Great Council of Chiefs, said the incident highlighted a worrying attitude towards public discourse.
“The insult was directed at ordinary citizens exercising their right to express support for a court process,” Mataitini said.
“When a Member of Parliament resorts to crude language against the public, it reflects poorly on leadership and respect for democratic values.”
Social media user Tanya Waqanika also criticised the remarks, describing them as “sad and shameful” coming from a government MP and former minister.
