FAST-PACED competition was noted at Fiji Swimming’s second Grand Prix, which took place at the Damodar Aquatic Centre in Suva yesterday.

A total of 170 swimmers competed at the event, which saw participants from various age groups and clubs out at the pools.

The event is also a qualifying one as swimmers vie for spots to represent Fiji in the Oceania Swimming Championships in May this year.

Fiji Swimming vice president Errol Taylor shared this yesterday and said the upcoming open nationals event will also be the end of the selection period for the Oceania meet.

Meanwhile, swimmers on the long list for the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland were able to get medical checks done at the event.

This is the second Grand Prix following the first one which took place on Saturday, January 31.

The turnout of swimmers increased in yesterday’s Grand Prix compared to the first one and all hands are on deck from all swimmers and officials as the Commonwealth Games draws nearer.

A highlight of yesterday’s Grand Prix was the participation of the Pukekohe Swimming Club from Auckland, New Zealand.

The team fielded five swimmers for the trip to Fiji and according to its coach Sheldon Kemp, the outing provided them with an opportunity to expose the swimmers to competition in an outdoor setting in a humid environment such as Fiji.
