The Commander of the Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF), Jone Kalouniwai, has shared a personal reflection on social media about his family’s involvement in mentoring young members of the Suva 4th Ward of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
In his post, Commander Kalouniwai described it as a “sacred privilege” to have spent the past three weeks walking alongside the youth as part of a four-year programme focused on studying the Old Testament.
“For two years now, my wife and I have been blessed to serve these 23 beautiful souls from across Raiwaqa, Raiwai, Toorak, Flagstaff to Domain, witnessing firsthand their devotion to the teachings of the Savior,” he wrote.
He highlighted the sacrifices made by the children, who attend early-morning classes from 6am to 7am before school.
“There is a holy beauty in the sacrifices these children make, rising in the quiet hours to seek the Lord,” he said.
Commander Kalouniwai added that his wife and family assist by collecting the children from their homes and preparing food for them before they head to school, describing it as a “labour of love.”
“In these complex and unsettling times, we need to ask ourselves what else can we do to build a better community,” he said, noting that his family’s focus is on helping the youth strengthen their faith and values.
He concluded by saying that this service brings his family “the greatest joy and deepest peace,” as they work to support young people through faith, leadership, and care.
